The classic flagman was present in June 1954 at Meridian's 22nd Avenue to warn motorists about trains from every rail company that served the Mississippi city. Here, Southern Railway freight train no. 153 for New Orleans eases across in a view from Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad's reefer-icing platform that served northbound banana trains. Meridian Union Station is above the last diesel units. (World War II folklore is that around 100 trains passed this point daily.)
